NI Max. There was a problem updating the settings for this device the operation timed out

Yes, there are two threads with the same title, but one is about not being able to talk to a DAQ the other about not being able to talk to a camera.

On this instance I open NI Max and see that warning message on the screen that shows System Settings/System Resources.

My question is what is "this device" in this case?  Why doesn't MAX tell me the device?  Or is the device the "system"?

NI MAX doesn't show IDs for some devices

I have a few instruments,  Newport ESP300 controllers, that don't show their IDNs in the left pane of MAX, under the GPIB bus listing, but selecting the device, the Identification is there in the Settings panel (see attached image).

Refreshing, scanning for instruments, doesn't update it either.  This is mildly annoying.  Is there a fix for it?

Max Database Not Running error and unable to start service error - Solved

I am posting this here because it took me a while to fix and other people may have the same problem now or in the future.

When I started MAX on a machine that I have not had MAX running on for quite a while I got a error that came up that said "The Max Database is Not Running.  Restart your system and try again.  Visit NI.com/info and enter the info code MAXStoppedServiceError if the problem persists"

After getting the above error I followed the advice I found on the NI website about starting the service but every time I tried to start the service I was getting Code 5 - Access denied.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling all of the NI software on my machine and this did not fix the problem.  After a lot of searching and digging I found a note on the internet about taking/changing the ownership of a folder to resolve this error.  On my computer the ownership of C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments was assigned to SYSTEM.  I changed the ownership of this folder to Administrators and then I was able to start the NI Configuration Manager service and get MAX to behave right.  To change the owner

I had to right click on the folder ( C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments)>>select properties>>go to security tab>click on advanced>>go to owner tab>>change current owner to Administrators (XXX\Administrators).  Since the computer I am on is a work computer I had to use the name of the local computer(XXX above)\administrators to get everything to work right.  On a computer that is not on a central login server the XXX/computer name may not be needed.

I do not know if this is in the right place for this or if I should put is somewhere else but this seemed like a good starting location.  I figured if it was on the forums people could find this solution in a search and it may be beneficial to them since it took me over a day to fix this problem.

Network down and NI Max cannot connect to GPIB, but the computer it is plugged into can ping the device.

My work's network went down yesterday and our test computer crashed. This required us to restart the computer the GPIB ENET 1000 is connected to. When trying to run our program in LabVIEW an error message popped up saying the GPIB could not be found.

We cycled the power on the GPIB, opened NI MAX to find the device which showed it could not connect. We opened a command prompt and successfully communicated with the device, but for some reason, LabVIEW and NI Max could not locate the device.

Does the GPIB require a functioning network connection to communicate with NI Max and LabVIEW? It was my assumption that because it is connected via Ethernet, access to the network would not be an issue.

Could anyone give any guidance as to how the device uses the network and why a network connection is needed?

Using GPIB-USB-HS+ for Logging Traffic on an Existing GPIB Network

Hello, I am investigating an existing test setup that is not well documented. Can I use the GPIB-USB-HS+ to plug into the existing GPIB network to monitor command and data traffic using the GPIB Analyzer? I am not that familiar with the GPIB Analyzer and wanted some expert input.

I read the white paper (https://knowledge.ni.com/KnowledgeArticleDetails?id=kA00Z000000PACmSAO) that states the GPIB-USB-HS+ can be de-selected as a System Controller in the Measurement and Automation Explorer, but I wanted to verify that I am not misreading the documentation as to it's usage. Thanks.

GPIB-485/422 Converter

I have a GPIB-485/422 converter (Mode C) connected to a RF Sig Gen in an enclosure. When the enclosure is powered, both units are turned on at the same time. In this case, the RF Sig Gen takes a while to power up and initialize. In the meantime, the GPIB-485/422 converter comes up, sees no instruments, and essentially goes to sleep (only PWR, RDY LEDs on). Communication with the Sig Gen is not successful.

Cycling power on the GPIB-485/422 converter after the Sig Gen is powered up and ready results in the converter seeing the Sig Gen and successfully  going into listener mode (PWR, RDY, and  LSTN LEDs on). In this case, communication with the Sig Gen is successful.

I am using a PC running TerraTerm connected to the GPIB-485/422 converter to communicate for test.

Does anyone know if there is a way to overcome this condition via software once it occurs. I am considering using a time delay relay to power the GPIB-485/422 converter, but would prefer a less brute force solution.

Hello Everybody,

could any of you tell me what is the impact of adding RTSI configuration to the NI MAX configuration in case I already sharing trigger between the devices in the one chassis as shown in the attached picture .

I got problem in the NI-MAX configuration and one of the suggestion is to add that. my concern if there will be any conflict between the two method.

Thank you very much

RSZVB driver print to file.vi

$

Hello everyone, I am new on this forum and new to LabView using a GPIB communication.

First of all, my application is to control a VNA using a GPIB communication. Until now everything is fine thanks to the RSZVB driver that I found on the NI download center. I can measure S parameters, do calibration and more... however there is something that I can't success to do : a hardcopy.

Indeed, I would like to make a hardcopy of the VNA's screen then store this copy in a file (BMP or JPEG) to finally send it to the master (computer).

This can be achieved with the vi "Print to file" and "Read File From Instrument" but when I'm using the "print to file" there is no errors but there is not file created or modified on the VNA memory. I looked on other possible directories or in the default directory, there is still nothing (even when I create by myself the file, it stays unchanged).

Of course I do the necessary before asking a print, initialising the VNA and seting the VNA display active.

Concerning the "Read File From Instrument" it's working perfectly.

Is there anyone familiar with this driver and especially this VI (Print To File) please ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

How to continue counting a reinitialized value via serial?

Hello,

I have a serial iteration count that is read from 0 - 10921. However I would like to be able to keep track of the count after the counter reiterates. Is there a LabVIEW function that will enable me to continue counting after reiteration to 0.

Many Thanks,

2 wire RS485 communication PXIe-8431/16 does not work

$

Hi all,

I am trying to communicate with a custom build pcb and a port of a PXIe-8431/16 via 2 wire RS485 Modbus. I use Measurement and Automation Explorer 17.5.0f0 and NI-Serial 17.0. The PXIe card is installed in a PXIe-1065 rack. The rack communicates with the PC via a PXIe-8370 card. In both Max and Windows device manager I can see all the serial port devices for the serial card. The connection between the PXI card and the PCB runs via a SH68-8DB9 RS485 197546C-01 cable.

I am trying to do Modbus communication over 2-wire RS485 to a custom build PCB. When I use an FTDI USB to RS485 adapter, communication is successfull. I can't get it to work with the PXI card  though.

I found in this topic I have to short pins 4 and 8 and pins 5 and 9 on the DB9 connector to use 2-wire communication. Over here I found that I have to set the Transceiver mode to "2 wire auto" since I don't use the DTR specifically. I also tried the other modes without any luck. I set these mode via Windows device manager since it is grayed out in Max.

If I hook up the transmit lines of a PXI port to the receive lines of another PXI port, I receive the data on the second port that I send through the first port. This works when I set both transceiver modes to "4 wire" or when I set both to "2 wire auto".

When i connect only the the transmit lines of a PXI port to the custom PCB, i see the RX and TX LED getting active. I checked with a scope with serial decoder and the PCB produces the correct Modbus answer. It isn't received by the PXI card however since the receive  lines are not connected in this scenario.

When I make the 4-8 and 5-9 bridges on the DB9 connector, the PCB doesn't receive anything. When I decouple the PCB, the bridges work as a loopback when I check with Max VISA test panel in 4-wire mode. In 2-wire auto mode, the error "VISA: (Hex 0xBFFF003E) Could not perform operation because of I/O error" pops up.

On the PCB I have an optional 120R resistor as bus terminator, switching on or off the terminator hasn't got any effect.

Who can think of something else to check?

Agilent 3495A with GPIB from national instrument

Hello everyone,

I am using a converter GPIB to USB from national instrument. . I would like to record data from the spectrum analyser.

I downloaded the I/O libraries suite but it doesn't recognize the spectrum analyser (see picture below “NI GPIB0”) probably because the GPIB-USB is not from Keysight.keysight.png

I don't know if I was a good idea to download national instrument GPIB driver, because it may have some driver conflict with the Keysight driver.

I have already tried to reinstall the software but it stills not working.

Have you ever had this kind of problem?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Using LabView to control SR560 pre-amplifier

$

Hello,

With LabView running on PC, I would like to remotely control SR560. Stanford Research SR560 Manual states instrument has listen only capability. "The SR560 is equipped with a standard DB-25 RS-232C connector on the rear panel for remote control of all instrument functions." It appears there are SR570 drivers available here and at the moment I am assuming these would work or be a good starting point.  So I'm looking for advice on how to add communication to the SR560 whether it be using an RS232 to USB cable (please recommend vendor & model number) or if possible using an option for connecting the SR560's RS232 to an existing GPIB solution that utilizes the NI USB to GPIB hardware.

Thanks.

Same models different instruments, no consistency.

I have just started running a lab with 4 big magnets run by 4 Lakeshore 648 power supplies. I want to have 4 graphs showing the last hour of current output for each magnet.

These are USB but install as virtual COM ports. Once connected, windows (7) finds the driver and installs it (seemingly) fine and I can communicate with each via VISA interactive control. However, 2 of them take a second press of the 'query' button before the read is printed...the other 2 work first time. The vi I've set up works fine for the latter 2 but errors out once I connect the former 2 and it's driving me crazy. All 4 look the same in windows device manager with the same drivers and are set up the same in the hardware end (there really aren't that many options anyway).

Basically with the same vi, 2 of the machines work fine and the other 2 do not. I've tried swapping the USB ports and cables to no avail. They were all delivered at the same time so there is not any version or firmware differences.

Anyone can shed some light on this, I would be eternally grateful.

Control PXI Card through LAN

Hello,

I have 1 PC with WIN XP (XP-PC) installed and PXIe chassis with remote controller PXIe-8135 (WIN7).  There is a PXI-5124 card inserted in the chassis.   What I want to do is that the XP-PC asks the remote controller PXIe-8135 to capture  a waveform with PXI-5124 and send the waveform data back to the XP-PC.  The XP-PC and controller PXIe-8135 are on  the same LAN.  I need to develop a C++ program on XP-PC to accomplish the task.

What I am thinking is that the XP-PC can communicate with the remote PXI card through IVI/Visa. To the XP-PC, the PXIe-8135+PXI-5124 is a standalone instrument, just like a remote scope.  Is this approach workable?  What do I need to do on the XP-PC and PXIe-8135, in terms of driver setup and programming?

Please advise.

Thanks!

Andy

Communicating with Ametek nVision Reference Recorder

I am trying to make Labview communicate with  Ametek nVision Reference Recorder. But when I connect it to sytem having LabVIEW 2013, nVision Reference Recorder is not getting detected in MAX. What could be the problem? I have downloade the required driver from "http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/niid_web_display.download_page?p_id_guid=3426BDE9241347A3E05400144FFB0315" and same has been put in  "National Instruments\LabVIEW 2017\instr.lib" folder . Software list in MAX shows all required drivers like NI-VISA 5.4 and Serial 488.2 are installed.

Adding a I-V graph to the 'Sweep and Acquire...' Example for Keithley 2401

Please forgive that I am a newbie to labview. I have looked around for an answer but haven't found one that does specifically what I want.

I would like to edit the Keithley 2401 'Sweep and Acquire Measurements' program to output a voltage vs. current graph, as well as outputting an excel file or some sort of readable array of data. I'm honestly not even sure where to start editing the program. I have tried going into the block diagram and replacing the waveform plot with an x-y, but keep getting an error that I have mismatched arrays. Could anybody point me in the right direction?

Thank you,

David

VISA Serial configuration

$

Hello all,

I'm trying to run the Simple Serial.vi from the Serial.lvproj from the examples included in LabVIEW 2013. I am trying to connect to the COM1 port on my computer, which shows up on the windows Device Manager.

LabVIEW gives the following error:

"Error -1073807342 occurred at Property Node (arg 1) in VISA Configure Serial Port (Instr).vi->Simple Serial.vi" with "Possible Reason: VISA:  (Hex 0xBFFF0012) Invalid resource reference specified. Parsing error."

I installed the VISA version 16 drivers and I can see the com port in the device manager and I can connect (and disconnect) from COM1 using Realterm (serial terminal program). The one thing that seems off is in NI MAX under Devices and Interfaces there is a line with a yellow warning symbol that says "No VISA resources found".

Do serial ports need to appear in NI MAX to be able to be used in LabVIEW? If so is there anything special I should do to get them to appear in MAX? I have a built in serial port as well as a USB serial port and I have been unable to move past this seemingly very simple step of recognizing and connecting to a serial port.
